Did you know that the clever cycle route network where you cycle from junction to junction is a Limburg invention? With 2.000 km of cycling paths Limburg is the cycling paradise of Flanders, Belgium.The province of Limburg almost 25 years ago, pioneered the concept of the ‘cycle node network’. Over the past decades, Limburg has grown into a true cyclist’s paradise of Flanders, Belgium and even the Euregion.
Cycling network of numbered intersections
Central Limburg has an extensive cycling network of numbered intersections, the fietsknooppuntennetwerk, stretching for some 1,000 kilometres. This simple signposted system gives cyclists an infinite number of possible routes. There are nearly 272 junctions. Little ferries take you across the river and many of the routes are for cyclists and pedestrians only. A unique feature of cycling in Central Limburg is that its network of numbered intersections links up with the German and Belgian networks. You can drink a Belgian beer and eat German ‘Kuchen’ all on the same evening.
If you see a Fietsers Welkom! sign outside a café, restaurant or hotel, it means that they offer extra service to cyclists: cyclists are welcome, in other words! This quality label is renewed every year.
Cycling through waters
The aim of Limburg is to strengthen its position by bicycle route network through innovative projects. Cycling through the water is an inspiring cycling path through a pond of the De Wijers in Bokrijk.
The new bicycle path through the water leads cyclists through a 212 meters long and three meters wide concrete path with water at eye level on both sides. Swans and other waterfowl out on the edge and watch the cyclists curiously.
On average 800 cyclists per day visit this unforgettable part of the Limburg cycling route network. It is marvelous to see the heads of the cyclists ‘glide’ across the water surface. Cyclists are always talking about this extraordinary experience.
‘Cycling through Water’ has provided qualitative improvements to the larger environment. This bicycle attraction is a clear ‘reason to come’ and a ‘reason to share’ for tourists from the Euregion.
International Meuse route
The International Meuse Cycle Route is a great route for cyclists of all proficiency levels as it follows the banks of the River Meuse. It starts at the river’s source in the French Vosges region and passes through Belgium into the Netherlands, the entire Meuse Cycle Route is around 1,000 km long. This attractive and varied route offers ever-changing scenery, with charming towns and villages on both banks of the river, plus there are plenty of cultural heritage sites and culinary treasures from beginning to end.

‘Cycling through the Trees’
Burolandschap Built Circular Cycle Path Among Trees In Belgium is called Cycling through the trees, the new cycle path through the trees provides a unique experience to the Limburg cycle route network. It includes a circular path of approximately 700 meters through and between the trees. At the highest point, cyclists are 10 meters above the ground. A double circle 100 metres in diameter – that rises gradually to a height of 10 metres before then descending again at the same gradient, giving cyclists and walkers a sensational 360° experience.
‘Cycling through the Heathland’
‘Cycling through the Heathland‘ in Hoge Kempen National Park. This landmark is part of a total metamorphosis of the cycling route between junction 550 and 551. The new route runs through the Mechelse Heide, one of the largest heathland areas in Flanders. You will see horses grazing in the distance and you will be able to spot many other animal species that live in the Park. It will be a unique experience in an extraordinary nature reserve.
