Barbençon is a wonderful village with an impressive past, founded in the province of Hainaut, a few kilometres from the French border. Once the regiment of the Lords of Barbençon, the village was recognized for its glassmaking and marble works. One of its streets is called ‘rue des Marbriers’. The Gothic and Renaissance Saint-Lambert Church underwent substantial improvement from 1967 to 1975. The tower was built in 1720 on 16th-century foundations. The south-facing arched portal is topped with a stone carrying the “de Ligne” coat of arms and its motto “Tant Que dure”. The church inwards exemplifies Barbençon’s rich past: enormous masonry by master glassmakers and marblers, the main altar, baptismal font, The rood screen supports an organ restored around 1900. Abbaye d’Alene is a living heritage of barbençon. Initially, it was a Benedictine monastery, established by Saint Landelinus about 637. The French burned it at the end of the 18th century, only a short time after it had been rebuilt on a larger scale.
The library, which contained 40,000 books and 5,000 manuscripts, was also destroyed. You can admire the old age constructions, it is a long way past to see this gem. If you’re in the Barbençon you should surely visit this place.
The Collegiate Church of Saint-Ursmer is a Catholic religious edifice built from 819 to 829. This building is the only Belgian church dating in its indispensable parts, from the Carolingian era. Slight modifications have been undertaken over the centuries, this building preserves a certain Carolingian composition, soothed by Mosan art shrine, entrance door, tower and ensemble. The collegiate church today serves as a parish church. This overlooks the valley of the Sambre. From this esteemed building, you can distinguish a valley which climbs gently towards Anderlues.
