- Architecture
Architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh made a see-through church for Borgloon. The aim of the young engineer-architects was to investigate and visualize the essence of architecture without the normal practical limitations of an “ordinary” building. The brilliant brain came up with a lot of other ideas before adding up transparency in the church. Reading between the Lines was built in 2011. It’s 10 meters high and consists of 100 layers of steel plates stacked on top of each other in the shape of a Loons church. The construction weighs no less than 30 tons. The special construction method ensures that the landscape always remains visible throughout the church, both from a distance and up close. The church is therefore present, but also absent from the landscape. However if the viewer sees walls from a higher or lower angle, the structure is suddenly solid. All said, the welded wonder.
This amazing illusion encourages more and more visitors in Borgloon.
