FOODS THAT CAUSE INFERTILITY

“The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” – Ann Wigmore.

Let’s look at the foods that are responsible for infertility in both men and women. Any couple facing infertility irrespective of the causes should be paying attention to these markers.

What’s the first step to consider when you know that you are a couple facing medically diagnosed infertility for any given reason? Address the things to AVOID and things to DO. Is that right? Any logical person would know that the beginning of managing any health problem is to know the dos and don’ts of their health problem.

Food is powerful!

This means food is not just powerful in improving health but also contributes to destroying it. If you think about it, food plays a vital role in determining your quality of life. Good eating habits equal a healthy life while bad eating habits result in many health problems negatively affecting the quality of life of an individual. Let’s elaborate more on that, here’s some food for thought. What will make you feel more refreshed and energized, a can of cola or fresh lemonade? The answer to that gives you a ballpark of what eating healthy feels like in the body.

what is inflammation?

Now coming to infertility, any form of reproductive disorders in men or women are associated with some form of inflammation in the body. So what is inflammation? It’s a state of swelling, redness, and/or infection that the body develops to combat an injury. The junk foods and highly processed diet that this generation consumes promote and sometimes induce levels of inflammation that slowly grow inside the body resulting in disorders like hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance, gastrointestinal problems like indigestion and flatulence, and many other mental and emotional problems too.

A lot of these contribute to infertility in men and women directly or indirectly. The common millennial these days can relate to a childhood wherein he/she ate mostly sugary foods, highly processed and packaged foods, and junk foods. Well into adulthood there is an addition of alcohol and caffeine, not to mention the high levels of stress in today’s workplace with long work hours, sleep deprivation, tons of painkillers, and antibiotics which build the stepping stones to complications like infertility way before they are diagnosed medically. So how do we combat this epidemic?

What are pro-inflammatory foods?

Firstly, all pro-inflammatory foods should be avoided. What are pro-inflammatory foods? The foods that promote or increase internal inflammation in the body are called pro-inflammatory foods. All processed, packaged foods are pro-inflammatory. All fast foods like your hamburger, pizzas, hot dogs, etc are pro-inflammatory. These foods harm your fertility in ways that you may not realize until it’s too late.

There is a difference between consuming these factory-manufactured tasty foods occasionally and eating them daily. Additionally, fried foods, sugar-laden drinks like chocolate shakes and colas, and sweet confections like cakes, chocolates, and baked foods, highly processed, noodles, pasta, and vegetable oils are also contributors to this diet that has adverse effects on fertility in some way or another. The human body has a limit to toxins in the blood.

Hence, a simple wholesome diet enriched with whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of greens, whole fortified flours, nuts and seeds, pulses and legumes, free-range eggs, grass-fed meat, and wild-caught fish works best for those who are dealing with infertility or want to avoid this problem in the future. Prevention is better than cure. So it’s only practical to be cautious and prepare for pregnancy 3-12 months in advance by following a healthy lifestyle.

So now you know what needs to be avoided to create a healthy environment for the reproductive system in your body.  You must also know that it’s not just women who need to be aware of what they eat, men are equally responsible in promoting a healthy pregnancy for the mother and foetus. A nutrient dense or nutrient deficient diet will help or harm the quality of both eggs and sperms. Let’s acknowledge that this journey of healthy eating for a healthy offspring will carry a lineage of disease free living.
