Caves of Hotton

An extraordinary natural heritage site of Wallonia, the Caves of Hotton are the only ones that are fully appraised. The Caves of Hotton are speleothem caves, also called the “1,001 nights caves,” the Hotton caves are a visit not to be missed. They were discovered in 1958 and are around 5 or 6 km long and 70 metres deep. A stream called Syphon runs at the bottom of the caves. Come and discover this jewel of the Belgian Ardennes with family or friends. This chasm in the depths of the earth offers an outstanding, natural underground phenomenon. Listen to the roaring of the torrent and experience all the emotions of the underground world.

The caves make you feel small and you get great respect for the pioneers who found and excavated this place. Good shoes are a must as the metal stairs can be a bit slippery. The money charged is worth, for a tour here. You will definitely love the natural art.

Riveo Centre

Push the door of Riveo and infiltrate the fantastic kingdom of the river. Explore a startling world of diversity and natural resources. The visit begins with “Par Toutéthys”, An exhibition to discover 5 major rivers on the planet. You will end with a stroll in the splendid gardens. You can rejoice in an exceptional mini-golf course with fountains, a lake and a stroll in the thematic gardens. Riveo centre is a true haven of peace to discover the sculptures of great figures of mythology or animals of the water’s edge.

Château de Deulin

Chateau de Deulin is a gorgeous castle.

Erected in 1758 by Guillaume Joseph de Harlez. Its distinctive U shape is made of whitewashed bricks and blue stones under slate roofs, with a middle yard surrounded by outbuildings. The heart of the Chateau is extravagantly decorated, especially with rococo stuccos from the artist  François-Joseph Dukers, and paintings by Jean-Dieudonne Deneux. To the north, a walled grassland dating from the 18th century was restyled into a French garden at the advent of the 20th century. Today you can admire the glorious views of the Ourthe river and the landscaped garden consisting of fascinating heritage trees.

Today the Chateau is inhabited by Stéphane and Dominique de Harlez de Deulin and their children. The magic of Christmas and a warm welcome will allure you to visit it again and again.

Bandstand at Hotton

Bandstand at Hotton is a place with historical importance and now utilized for adventurous activities such as kayak, fishing and many more. On a wintery mid-December day in 1944, three powerful German armies plunged into the semi-mountainous, heavily forested Ardennes region of eastern Belgium and northern Luxembourg. Four weeks later, after grim fighting, with heavy losses on both the American and German sides, the Bulge ceased to exist. Adventures and activities are at fullest here. Delicious kayaking on D’Ourthe in Hotton kayaking is an unforgettable experience.  You can gaze at the elegant scenic beauty. The region is hilly and beautiful green also famous for mountain biking. You must rent a mountain bike. These routes are also very worthwhile in this region. The villages you pass through are very gorgeous. In the summer many cosy terraces are warmed up for you. Calestienne garden

Calestienne garden is a gorgeous garden of Hotton. The garden is located at the Caves of Hotton. La Calestienne is the name given to a continuous strip of limestone land stretching from the Liège region to Chimay via Remouchamps, Hotton, Rochefort, Han and Givet. In Hotton, it marks the limit between the Ardennes and the Famenne. Apart from the largest caves in the country, the Calestienne conceals a rich and varied natural flora, specific to limestone soils.
