Address
The Koppenberg is a guarantee of excitement during every tour of Flanders. Koppenberg is a 77 m hill. No wonder that it is now recognized as a national monument. This climb is part of the route of the Tour of, Flander’s professional cycling race and feared by many because of its steepness and because of its cobblestones. But not only the status as one of the classics of the “Ronde”, but also the beauty of the landscape make it a highlight of every bike ride.
Facing all the hardships in a climb finally you get a reward of the panoramic views from the top. A place where you feel that just by raising a hand high you can touch the sky.
- Notre-Dame Cathedral
The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Tournai lies at the heart of the old city not far from the left bank of the Escaut near Maarkedal. Built in the first half of the 12th century, it is seen as a precursor of the vast Gothic cathedrals, constructed in the school that developed north of the Seine. As soon as you enter, the first thing to notice is one of the most impressive Romanesque naves I’ve ever seen, with a beautiful Rose stained glass on one end, but a surprisingly simple Baroque altar on the other. The dimensions of the transept adorned with five towers, is surely the most emblematic characteristic of the Tournai Cathedral. Later on, the architects became more influenced by the then fashionable Gothic style. It’s one of the most amazing cathedrals you’ll ever visit.
