The old Mill
In Nobressart, the mill still bears imprints of its Austrian past. The mill is accessed by a hallway perpendicular to the central street of the village. The road, lined with adjoining cottages and substantial farms, ends in a cul-de-sac. This is where the Nobressart mill is tracked down. The mill has undergone numerous modifications over the centuries. The prevailing face of the mill illustrates a complex of buildings curiously adjusted between the courtyard and the retention pond where the mill canal ends, found at the back. The first glimmers of the mill are found from the 17th century. The manuscripts remark about the King and are subject to banality. The mill was rebuilt in 1776, the rectangular cartouche exemplifying the Austrian two-headed eagle stamped with the initials MT bears witness to this. Around 1860, the mill had a second grinding wheel and a sawmill. This was, moreover, the normal development of most of the mills in the region. In 1984, one of the grindstones was replaced by a cylinder mill, again for economic reasons. It was in 1968 that the mill ceased all activity, upon the death of the last miller, Jacques-Joseph Ney. It is also interesting to note that the mechanics contain a lot of cast iron parts. Currently, it is sometimes put back into activity by its owner. This has transformed it into a museum and also offers the public to buy its local products. You will surely enjoy this ancient heritage.
School and old town hall of Nobressart
Do you wish to look where your ancestor might have studied? Do you want a comparison? The School and old town hall of Nobressart provides you with the perfect traces of our glimmering past. This building was built between 1858 and 1864, originally encompassing the town hall, the teacher’s lodging and a school which is still in operation today. It comprises a cubic prominent volume of three coves of elevated openings, the sculpted pediment of which indicates the year of construction in the configuration of a chronogram written in German. This inscription has the explicitness of demonstrating this date when one adds the numerical letters. Two significant rectangular volumes are disseminated symmetrically on either side of the central building. The one on the left housed the old town hall while the right extension was the teacher’s former residence. This serviceable categorization guarantees an unavoidable prestige to the public building, while accomplishing an economy of scale. The neoclassical style of the building, which can be glimpsed in the accurate symmetry of the street facade and the architectural details, affirms its status. Which makes it one of the most popular points in the village.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows
Visit the most amazing chapel in the town. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows is renowned throughout Europe. This beautiful building has a door with a domed lintel, surmounted by a circular motif that provides entrance to the chapel while a parsimonious light penetrates through two small rectangular windows lanced in the gutter walls. The building is enclosed with a simple slate roof. The statue of the Virgin in the sanctuary was looted several years ago. There are no exact details about the date of establishment of the chapel. However, one can ascertain that its setting is several centuries former because in the tradition of Nobressart written in 1656, the village community takes the chapel as a landmark to delimit particular passages and provincial paths. This chapel has been destroyed and then rebuilt. During restoration work in the 1980s, ancient stones were brought to light which was probably the remains of the original chapel. It is a sure place to visit in Nobressart.
The old tram
The old tram will surely draw your attention when you are in town. The voyage made by the tram was from Arlon and continued through Schadeck, Post, Louchert, Nobressart, Heinstert, La Corne du Bois des pendus, La Folie and Martelange. The procession consisted of a locomotive, passenger cars, and an end van that delivered goods and mail. In winter the tram was warmed up by a stove named small Devil. At that time, the tram was one of the most widely used means of transport, faster, more practical and less expensive. Four thousand kilometres of regional roads were established across the kingdom, including 400 in the province of Luxembourg. Tourist trips, particularly to the North Sea, amassed the first success. In 1913, rolling stock represented 58 million francs. Then buses and cars appeared and became competitors. But still, the old tram holds its significance.
