GRIMBERGEN CASTLE
Let’s begin our signposted walk from here.
At the end of the walk the Prinsenkasteel immediately attracts attention in the Prinsenbos. It
was the residence of the Lords of Grimbergen. During the Second World War it was an
ammunition depot that was set on fire by the retreating Germans. Today only the princely
domain and the castle ruins remain of the castle. The castle’s former moat is today a pond.
It’s quite heartbreaking to see the glory of past in shreds.
Moving further you will be attracted by the true gem of Belgium the Museum of old
techniques. It has an extensive collection of hand tools, technical manuals and trade
catalogues. The MOT studies the history of techniques, more specifically natural power. The
subject is limited to what is driven by muscle, water or wind power. Science lovers spend
their pleasant hours here.
Now we can come around to the best basilica. It is a medieval Romanesque basilica. The
crypts include the tombs of Saint Servais, the first bishop of the Netherlands and Charles de
Lorraine. Admire the portals with their sculptures. The south tower bell, called Grameer
(grandmother) weighs almost 7 tons. In the church, there is a statue of Charlemagne.
Treasure and collection of religious art accessible by paying an extra fee.
The Hanssenspark is the oldest public park in Vilvoorde. The park was named after Edmond
Hanssens, mayor of Vilvoorde at the end of the nineteenth century. The park was built on
the site of the former medieval fortress moat. These were swampy grounds along the
Trawoolbeek on which there is the fortress pond in front of the city walls was located.
ABBEY BEER MUSEUM
The chance of how and where Grimbergen beer is brewed, the abbey, in collaboration with
the brewery, has set up part of its buildings as an “abbey beer museum”.
The different types of “Grimbergen beer” are still available and the beer is even enjoyed
worldwide as an abbey beer. A film, a tour of the atmospheric exhibition and a tasting of the
beer make it worth a visit.
We wish that you enjoyed this walk around Grimbergen. There’s actually a lot more to see
and visit in this town.
