Check out our list for your trip to Tervuren:
Park van Tervuren
In a stone’s throw from the energetic Brussels Region, on the eastern edge of the green belt surrounding Brussels, you will find the Park of Tervuren – also known as Warande. You will love this beautiful park. It is one of the Flemish gateways to the Sonian Forest. The park had formerly prevailed as the King’s property, however, it was dramatically distorted during the preparation for the 1897 Exposition. Originally, the land was once the hunting estate of the Dukes of Brabant. The monumental remains of a rich past give additional flair to this green oasis. A walk between magnificent oak and beech trees, past elegant French gardens, ponds, and flower beds, is a relief after a day in busy Brussels. It’s plenty of nature here. It also has a playground for kids. It is good to go for a run, for a ride on the bicycle or a walk with your family and dog. The sunset is beautiful there too, you cannot imagine how incredible it is. A place to experience the calm and peaceful environment.
Royal Museum for Central Africa
The Royal Museum for Central Africa is incredible. This museum is one of the most visited museums in Belgium and houses unique collections from former colonies in Central Africa. After extensive renovation of 5 years, this is a highly recommendable museum. This museum is dedicated especially to the colonial period of Congo under Leopold II reign. It is quite challenging to face colonial past and difficult ethical questions by nations, governments and people. Perception and manipulation may make any historical revisiting rather complicated and difficult to navigate – in the case of the museum in question here, a lot of thought and hindsight came to play and has resulted in a worthwhile positive outcome. There are multiple sections to visit from masks and costumes to music and rituals. You can see lots of colourful pieces of rocks and realise what an amazing place we live in and which NEEDS to be PRESERVED.
An excellent experience that you will love. Worth a visit for adults and kids!
Saint John’s Evangelist Church
Another worth visiting place without which your trip to Tervuren is incomplete, that is The Sint-Jan-Evangelistkerk church. In the Market in Tervuren lies the Sint-Jan-Evangelist built from the 13th – 14th century. The church was originally the personal church of the Dukes of Brabant, some of which are buried in the choir of the church. It is a church without a tower, which was demolished for stability reasons and never rebuilt again. It stands proudly showcasing the glorious past. Looking at its ruins we sink into the glorious past. The ruins tell the tales that this church had seen. A sure to visit the place.
Sonian Forest
A place of two-hundred-year-old beech trees, oak tree groves and other examples of native species covering more than 5,000 hectares make it the main oxygen tank of Brussels. This ancient, highly diversified forest is a classified site and a Natura 2000 conservation area. Its 5,000 hectares are divided between the country’s three regions, and 40% of its territory lies in the Brussels Region. It includes five nature reserves, two forest reserves and two archaeological reserves. It’s forested vistas lend themselves to all kinds of sport: cycling, riding, Nordic walking, jogging. There are also 3 big fishing lakes for doing a spot of carp fishing. The area near Tervuren is magnificent. It’s just perfect for romantic strolls, biking and fishing.
You will definitely enjoy the picnic spots in this area. It’s a fun place for adults and kids.
