To reach the town:Groot Begijnhof 9, 3300 Tienen

Begijnhofkerk is an astonishing place. Tienen is often mentioned as the second oldest beguinage, where construction of the early Gothic Begijnhof church started. The floor plan consisted of three naves and a protruding pseudo-transept from the 13th century. The choir and the side chapels date from the 14th century. Only the pointed arch vaults of the nave have been preserved against the facade. The church bond in 1976 today it looks like the ancient ruins.

It’s an oasis of beauty and history. you will be mesmerized by seeing this treasure of Tienen. Place radiates calm, you can have a soothing and beautiful walk here.

If you are travelling in Tienen then you will surely encounter the large tractors loaded with the brim with large, white, carrot-like root vegetables. They are sugar beet. If you have a sweet tooth then you should surely visit this sugar museum. At the entrance, you will have an informative audio guide. You will discover the history of sugar beet in Flanders, how it’s grown, harvested and processed, and a thousand uses for sugar. The museum has a fascinating video interview with a former seasonal labourer who describes the back-breaking work. Another fascinating film shows a sugar artist at work as he melts the sugar, pours it into carefully constructed and often complicated moulds and forms the most amazing structures. Het Toreke is a place where you see life and death together. Tucked into the yard behind the tourist office this elegant museum serves you with nice collection of the rich grave from Roman Tienen, with highlights including a vividly recreated funerary scenes and also a good image of the world of gods from the Gallo-Roman period and the burial gifts and customs of the that period. The Museum is built within a building made up of the spired stone originally used as a prison. Today this Museum is the major highlight of Tiene. It’s historical and archaeological beauty attracts visitors from across the world. It’s wonderful to see how rich the history of Tienen is.

In the memory of the great Belgian this statue was constructed. Here you can pay homage to the Belgian cycling legend Eddie Merckx for a moment. Of all the old heroes in cycle-fanatic Belgium, Eddy Merckx takes the cake. While he’s often cited as the fastest, the toughest, and all-around greatest cyclist to ever compete. Merckx has been popularly known as  ‘Baron Eddy’ ever since he was given the noble title. Today many cycle races are held in the name of the Eddy Merckx. The statue stands here in the birthplace of Eddie Merckx and reminds one of the most successful cyclists ever. You can surely pay a visit here and admire the sculpture of the great cyclist.

If you wish to see a unique grave monument then you should surely visit Drie Tumuli. The most unique evocation of Tienen’s rich Roman heritage is this trio of grave mounds commemorating Marcus Probius Burrus. Gallo-Roman tumuli is dating from the first or second century. For several years, work has started to restore the landscape around these burial mounds and attention has been paid to the historical value of the tumuli. The grave monument of Marcus Probius Burrus consists of 3 man-made hills with a diameter of almost 30 meters and a height of more than 10 meters. A quiet and beautiful place for walking with information boards here and there on the Tumuli. The site of the three tumuli has now become a beautiful tourist attraction.

If you ever come to Tienen, definitely give the effort to visit  Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Poelkerk. This church is considered to be  the cradle of Brabant High Gothic. You will be astonished to know that you know how many Flemish architects have worked on this church. Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Poelkerk is a really impressive cathedral with a beautiful square in front of it and a very artistic belfry. It consists of the unique paintings of saints who once served there. The oddly shaped church has a soaring 70m, 15th-century tower in white stone capped by a 1654 baroque spire.
