Wine growing and wine making in Belgium have been experiencing a true revival for 20 years now. Although the Little Ice Age, wars, and urbanization have taken its toll on Belgian viticulture, ongoing efforts since have revived its old traditions.

  Belgium is the world’s smallest wine producer among countries with officially recognized and designated wine regions. Belgium is a true hidden gem!

Château Bon Baron is one of the Belgian wineries that turned the tide in the Walloon region. The vineyards are situated in the beautiful valley of the river Meuse, not far from Dinant. 

The wines are being produced organically, so there are no pesticides, herbicides or insecticides being used. It had an eye for detail and the “female touch” is not lacking. They have flawless wines, enough space for experiments and they provide a complete guide about  new grape varieties. And that from so close! Their wines are filled with quality, passion, flavour and elegance.

In the heart of the Meuse valley in Limburg, in the picturesque village of Aldeneik, Europe’s most northern Pinot vineyard is situated. In their tour, they explain about the warm microclimate and the unique stony soil guarantee a mineral, elegant and fruity taste. Their Pinot wines have been awarded the Best Belgian wine several times. Their vineyard is a nice place for a walk and they give all details about winemaking and also wine tasting. The Hagegoud vineyard is a small-scale company where quality takes precedence over quantity.

The super-friendly owners will give you a lovely tour of their vineyard, and explain the whole process for making their wines. Their major products are full bodied red wine and fresh, aromatic white wines.The production process takes place in a traditional way, of course according to all the rules of the art, but with a minimum of manipulations. Between Tongeren and Maastricht, along the old Roman roads, in the municipality of Riemst, lies the only Wine Castle of Belgium. The Romans had already vineyards in this area some 2000 years prior.

The Wine Castle of Genoels-Elderen is with its 25 hectares of vineyards, the largest wine domain in the country. Guides will show you around the park, the vineyards, a rose garden, the distillery, the press house and the cellars which date from the 13th to the 20th century. Wines are excellent here and the place is worth a visit.
