Bornem Castle
The castle Bornem is a hidden gem on the banks of the Oude Schelde. Bornem Castle, also known as the De Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde Castle is a country house, formerly a castle. Well, the hidden castle in a great nature trail – castle only visitable by appointments. The earliest fortification on the site was of the 10th or 11th centuries, later the castle was built on the foundations of the older building in 1587 by Spanish noblemen. The present house was built on the same site at the end of the 19th century the castle was renovated with respect to the new elements of the building. It remains in the ownership of the house Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde, the current resident is John de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde. The extensive state is dotted up with a fabulous garden and water fountains perfectly complementing its presence. There are lots of free walking opportunities all around in this very quiet and green castle grounds cyclists and walkers will love this path. Highly recommended!
D’Ursel Castle
D’Ursel Castle is an exceptionally pleasant domain to stay. The castle is a nice place to visit. It’s quite interesting to visit the former residence of the d’Ursel family. There are mostly portraits and some ancient furniture on display. Rather rare chambers are dedicated to the Brussels residence of the family, which was torn down in the 1960s. The castle has been beautifully restored and forms the centrepiece of the nineteenth-century landscape park, where large trees are the norm. The castle itself can already be seen from the avenue that looks straight onto the front of the building, which is a hark back to the grandeur of yesteryear. The domain in itself is accessible via several gateways. A large and green domain guarantees a pleasant walk with opportunities to relax on variously spaced benches. Around the castle is a beautiful park for walking, cycling, jogging etc. You can experience many activities. It is quiet and you can fully enjoy nature.
The Notelaer
The Notelaer is a beautiful domain on the Scheldt where you can drink and/or eat and where you can spend the night in a kind of bell/tent in a tree. The history of the pavilion at De Notelaer cannot be separated from the history of the ferry, which already existed at De Notelaer in the seventeenth century. Beautiful pavilion in neoclassical style with a stupendous view on the river Scheldt. Home to the Duke of d Ursel who also owned the nearby castle. In the park, there is a self-service cafeteria. Great place. De Notelaer owes its name to a striking walnut tree that stood on the Scheldedijk in the first half of the seventeenth century. This was originally a pavilion of the castle d’Ursel. Around 1780, Duke Wolfgang-Guillaume d’Ursel and his wife Flore d’Arenberg decided to build a pavilion on the Notelaer. There is a beautiful pond where you can take nice pictures of the castle with reflection. There is a beautiful art in the garden. It’s a beautiful place to visit. You will love being here.
Temsebrug
Temsebrug is a beautiful and modern bridge that provides an important connection between the E17 (Ghent – Antwerp) and the A12 (Antwerp – Mechelen – Brussels). The bridge is a pleasant place to walk and cycle, although you should be careful of this shared path. You can enjoy the view of Temse, the bend of the Scheldt and the polder of Bornem. Every week they sell a new menu with fresh and honest products so that you can experience that H-eat vibe at home as much as you would with them.
