Crupet Castle

Visit this cute crupet Castle if you are on the Euro Belgium tour. In the stream valley steeply below the village centre is the picturesque Château de Crupet. Crupet Castle, also known as Carondelet Castle, dates back to the 11th or 12th century is a massive medieval donjon, partially submerged in the waters of the lake of Crupet. Over the years, the castle has been owned by several different families. Originally, the castle was built like a squat keep with 3 floors out of limestone, equipped with battlements and a wall walk. Later in the 16th century, it was transformed into a castle farm and several elements were added: the stair tower on its corner, an extra floor with a new roof,  Renaissance-style windows and a stair tower. It now stands in a little lake and is connected to its bailey by a stone arched bridge. Highly recommended!

Grotte Saint Antoine De Padoue

These caves are dedicated to Saint-Antoine de Padoue, were built between 1900 and 1903 by the inhabitants of the village under the leadership of Canon Jules Gérard, parish priest of Crupet. The landmark of this remarkable cave was built next to the church by the pastor and his parishioners. With its kitsch architectural style, the artificial Saint-Antoine de Padoue cave in Crupet makes an impression on anyone who visits it. The cave houses scenes from the life of Saint Anthony, reconstructed using plaster and cast iron statues. The expressive statue of the devil rejected by Saint-Antoine marks more singularly the minds of today. We also find in popular expressions the name “Devil’s Caves” to designate the whole. Whether you like it or not, it is worth a visit because you can go in, on it and behind it and that always gives a different religious theme but also a different image of the environment. The Saint-Antoine caves, together with the old presbytery and the church, form an ensemble of great heritage value which has also been classified as a site by the Walloon Region.

Old Crupet presbytery

Located on Rocky Street in the heart of the beautiful Crupet near the Grotte Saint Antoine De Padoue lies this Old Crupet presbytery. Once this presbytery was very significant, this building is dated ‘1654’ by a row of wrought-iron anchor plates on the south facade. You will see the age-old architecture. You will surely admire this age-old architecture that still stands proudly in the heart of Belgium. It’s considered one of the oldest constructions of Belgium. You can also see the date on a small stone, with the coat of arms, at the top of the same facade. The Saint-Antoine caves, together with the old presbytery and the church, form an ensemble of great heritage value which has also been classified as a site by the Walloon Region.

You will be astonished to hear that a small village like crupet also holds a decent art gallery-like Artpéro Gallery. Based on the pleasure of sharing the work of living artists, the Artpero Gallery welcomes you in the heart of Crupet. Crupet, an art gallery opened about twenty years ago.

The Gallery showcases a wide range of artistic practices: graphic arts, painting, sculpture, photography, music, jewellery and many more. All this lavish artwork will lure you and steal your heart. You can take pride in remaining openly minded regarding the work of different artists and the cultural life of the village and its surroundings. It is currently hosting the works of a Wépionnaise artist. Jane-Sylvie Van den Bosch is a painter and glassblower. All the artists who were to exhibit during the months of confinement were invited to a large collective exhibition in this gallery which was also to celebrate its 20 years. Highly Recommended!

Old Mill “Plane”

There are two memorable mills in Crupet. They are both well-preserved pieces of the village’s heritage. A piece of water, established on the street side, nevertheless recalls the reach of one of the oldest mills in the village, as evidenced by its first mention in 1495. the first half of the 18th century stood at the foot of the slope. Two levels high and shallow, it corresponds to the typical volume of Condroz. Its the main building, in limestone rubble, has two bays of asymmetrical mullioned bays, one of which is on the right on the ground floor, which was rectified in the 19th century. On the right bank of the Crupet stream is situated a large, 300-year-old building of the former “Delvosal” paper mill. It was built in the distant 1769 from limestone rubble. The machinery of the mill was installed in the two lower levels of the backside. In 1850, the paper mill was converted into a flour mill and 150 years later – into the well-known local hotel “Le Moulin des Ramiers”. Another local gem you should stop by is the Old oil factory mill. Its wooden mill wheel and the ivy-covered façade are noticeable from the street. The meadow behind the building is the perfect picturesque spot for a picnic.
