Herbeumont is a little village with some remarkable establishments which makes it perfect for your travelogue. Herbeumont is a French citizen of Belgium, in the southern province of Luxembourg. The name Herbeumont consists of the German word HERB which means harsh and the Latin substantive MONT which means height. We can also understand this name as “grassy mountain”. Lately, the mining activity propelled Herbeumont into a flourishing industrial activity. The extraction of schist and the making of slate made the village known throughout Belgium. Castle of Herbeumont is worth visiting. The medieval ruins of Herbeumont castle are classified as “Major Heritage of Wallonia”. Located at the top of a rocky ridge overlooking the village and the meanders of the Semois in its green setting. The castle was built in 1268 A.C. The castle had 6 towers equipped with arms and armaments, the watchtowers to the north were of a solid keep. The castle was set on fire and destroyed by the French combatants. Today the castle proudly stands in Herbeumont and it’s walls tell the tales of times observed by it.
Today this place has picturesque ruins and an incredible view of the surrounding countryside and the river Semois. Completely open access with some interesting signs explaining the sites historical significance. Access is via a moderately steep gravelled path.
You can go for 10 minutes hiking in the forest to reach the fortress.
- St. Nicholas Church
St. Nicholas Church lies in the heart of Herbeumont. It is a Neo-Romanesque church with a remarkable high altar. The entire church is made up of slate stone from the local slate quarries and the roof is made up of shale slate. Large glass windows are illuminated in the church which just perfectly enhances its glory. In this old heritage still, the bell is ranged which reminds us of the past privilege of this place. The melodious sound of bells is heard in the entire Herbeumont. This beautiful church is highly recommended.
Gaze at the beautiful view of the Semois in the Belgium Ardennes from the Knight’s Tomb. The knight’s tomb is a wooded mound surrounded by the Semois, visible from the fortified castle and whose shape is reminiscent of a medieval burial.
You can trek to this point. The first point of the route starts from the banks of river Semois it further takes you to the forest full of broad leaves trees, Green oasis and hard timbers. The path is steep as you reach higher and finally, you will see the flag showing your conquering destination. You will be welcomed by the cool breeze and panoramic views of the Semois river. The Old viaduct over the Semois has located 1 km from Herbeumont, between this village and Sainte-Cécile. It was constructed to cross the river. Spanning the Semois, it stands at a height of over 40 meters and is over 120 meters in length. Built-in the 15th century this viaduct is yet strong and artistic. The viaduct follows the Conques tunnel, an old railway linking Sainte-Cécile to Herbeumont. It allows you to pass under the peaks of the massif which is 1350 meters long, it is totally rectilinear. The bridge is one of the emblematic places of Belgium. It’s good to visit this place when you’re near Herbeumont.
Travel to Herbeumont, you can take a trek to the forest of Conques. This walk goes through the forest of Conques to the viewpoint of Libaipire. This route is full of adventures. Here you can have a breathtaking view of Le Tombeau Du Chevalier. It is a meander of the Semois river. You need to follow the banks of river Semois, you can also get a route map from the local areas. The trek is moderately difficult and can also be accessed by the children. The cool breeze, rustling sounds of leaves, chirping of birds will endure you. You’ll find the table and benches located in a turn with a view of the Priory of Conques. It’s a highly recommended place.
