Historical pointers:
In the 13th century, Damme was the port for Bruges, to which it was linked by the river Reie. It is a historic fortified town that grew up in Medieval times as a trading outpost for nearby Bruges. After the stormflood of 1134, the Zwin was created. The dikes on the right- and left banks of the Zwin were connected to eachother in a place then called “Ten Damme”. A new canal was dug between Bruges and that place. At the end of that canal, the people from Bruges built a lock-chamber. The fortifications can still be traced by lines of tall poplar trees and in places by a moat. Very few small places have such an extensive historic heritage as Damme: the town hall, Our Ladies church, Saint-John’s hospital and a number of old civilian houses are the proud remains of a rich past.
