Jardin des Hiboux

In the middle of the Ardennes Namuroise hides a small aviary like no other: the Jardin des Hiboux! Le Belge locomotive

Le Belge locomotive is a wooden reproduction of a locomotive, quite an unexpected find in the center of Vresse.

Discover this unusual heritage which is located in a town where there is no railway past and where one, therefore, does not expect at all to meet an object of this style. This is the wooden replica of the oldest locomotive in Belgium dating from 1835. This unique art piece features in full size the very first machine built in Belgium by John Cockerill.

Named “Le Belge”, it was operational from 1885 onward. This locomotive is only 20 m away from the Glycine art gallery and of the Centre d’Interprétation d’Art – Fondation Chaidron. On the other hand, this model must more than probably be the only one to represent a full-size locomotive. It’s a  good idea to have installed this locomotive in this charming village. Ardois’Alle

Immerse yourself in the mining world of yesterday and today. The mine is nothing but a huge cave perched at the top of the charming and lively village of Alle-Sur-Semois, the mine supported the families of the region for decades. Abandoned in 1948, hundreds of meters of galleries under the rock came back to life in 2012 thanks to the activity of Vincent Theret.

The visit begins with a projection on the evolution of the mine through the ages. Then you dive into the heart of the mining world of the time, Follow in the footsteps of generations of miners. Under the watchful gaze of bats, you walk through the mysterious corridors to the enchanting lagoon and relive a century of local industrial history.

It stretches over several hundred meters and ends in the main hall which, according to the elders, “contains the village church”. A window opens onto the past with a collection of small personal items collected from the mine. At the same time, schist sculptures and a collection of slate design objects were created by Vincent Théret. You will learn all about the life of a miner and the slate of yesterday and today. The site is accessible all year round. All year-round, it is 10 ° C in the mine. Hence it is advisable to dress warmly. The site is not accessible by public transport. Highly recommended!

La Haute Voie

Cafe Lallemand

Cafe Lallemand is an ideal place to take a short break, in a setting that has kept the authenticity of the cafes of yesteryear. Tracked down in Gros-Fays, one of the most gorgeous villages in Wallonia, Café Lallemand is a place where time has stood still. A typical Ardennes bistro where life is decent, a magical place to admire a good drink with ease. This local café has reopened since Sept 2018. You will encounter a lot of local Arden’s folks, especially on Sunday noon.

Good to taste the friendly Belgian Walloon sphere of the Ardennes. The place is usually open on Friday evenings and Saturdays and Sundays. You will enjoy it very much, tasting basic local draft beer and sitting on the terrasse, talking and watching local village people having a good warm Sunday break. When you eat the way out in Alle, Cornimont, Gros-Fays, Vresse it is a good place to have a stone between walking and cycling.
