Crepe Day – What is it and Why is it celebrated on Candelmas ?

by Lajja

Crepe day it is.

What is crepe day?

Every year 2nd February is being celebrated as Crepe Day. In France and Belgium, crepes are traditionally served on Candlemas (La Chandeleur), February 2nd. Originally this was Virgin Mary’s Blessings Day but now it is known as “Les Jour Des Crepes” in France. The day came in existence because the tradition dates back to 472 when Pope Gelasius I offered Crêpes to French pilgrims that were visiting Rome for celebrating the Chandeleur.

What is the Tradition?

It is being believed that on the Crepe day the cook needs to hold a coin in a dominant hand and tries to flip the crepe with the other hand. If the crepe lands flat then the family will have a year full of wealth. Preferably the coin should be gold as it resembles the golden color of crepe.

There are other beliefs like putting the first crepe from the batch in the drawer to bring luck and prosperity for the coming year.

Crepes are just like pancakes but very thin. There is a big difference as pancakes can leave you feeling very much full but after eating crepes you will still feel light.

So Nowadays people invite family and friends over to celebrate this day.

They offer the guest the whole Crepes Buffet by making many varieties of filling for Crepe.

Timeline of Crepes :

1.Originated in 472 AD

2.Buckwheat was introduced in the 12th Century AD in Brittany.

3.Buckwheat Crepes Originated in 13th Century AD

  • Connected to Brittany where the Crepes were originated. people started coming to Paris to sell their products and that is how Crepe was introduced in Paris.

In the 20th Century, White Flour was Used in Crepes.
