The Hoëgne flows through Theux, and ends in the Vesdre in Pepinster. A beautiful walk can be made through the valley of the Hoëgne.

The Valley of the Hoëgne

You’re going to love the Valley of the Hoëgne. It’s one of the prettiest river valleys in Belgium.

Let’s know what makes it more interesting than the other valleys in Belgium?

The hiking trail along the Hoëgne is a combination of forest path, tree trunk bridges, deck paths, and pieces of rock. The river plays with the rocks and causes beautiful waterfalls and small ponds. It’s not a smooth path for a romantic stroll however it’s a path with a bit of adventure with nature which you will obviously love to walk on.

You can start at this chalet. Le Chalet du Pont de Belleheid. Your superb adventure begins at “Pont de Belleheid.” Funny thing is that you have to go through the river to reach there. Don’t panic, the depth is only 10 cm.

The hiking trail to be followed is well marked with signs with a blue cross. From here you will follow the rocky path with some vertical and horizontal rocks arranged in the sequel as if some evil is determined to stop the river in its trails. But we all know that water is going to win. All of this invents a unique natural beauty there. As always, the start is fairly easy but soon it becomes a bit spicier but also more beautiful and fun!

After about one kilometer of walking, you will arrive at the waterfall Léopold II. It was officially inaugurated by Queen Marie-Henriette in 1899. It really looks fairytale. This is no silent valley. You hear it from a distance, The noise of gallons of water falling, splashing, plopping, splattering, spraying, splashing, and gurgling will yank you towards it like a magnet. Everywhere you look, there’s lots of green: moss, lichens, ferns, grass, flowers. All of this creates a green and lush valley. It’s not a completely untouched path there are some age-old establishments like a dozen of so impressive and aesthetically pleasing wooden bridges criss-cross the river. Which helps you keep your footing on the slippy trails. At the end of the trail, you will come out into an open expanse. Altogether it’s a 10 km marked route. The shortest route is 8 km, but you can easily make it 12 km or even 21 km. The choice is yours! Lastly, there is a small lookout point with a shelter, from where you can get spectacular views of the valley.
